National West Zone Table-Tennis Tournament (Women's) at Jagran Lakecity University

The game that made two nations join hands together again, considered the best brain game in the world, Table-Tennis is no child’s play. The National West Zone Inter-University Women’s Tournament 2017-18 was organized at Jagran Lakecity University Bhopal. It took place between 1st to 5th February 2018 where a total of 38 teams participated from Gujarat, Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh and Maharashtra.

The tournament was declared open on 1stFebruary 2018 and for the following four days, the JLU campus witnessed a battle of reflexes. Out of the 38 participating teams, 4 qualified for the All India Tournament where the University of Mumbai bagged Gold Medal, Savitribai Phule University, Pune bagged Silver Medal, University of Rajasthan, Jaipur bagged Bronze Medal and DAVV, Indore was awarded Consolation.

The medals were awarded during the closing ceremony on 5th February 2018 that was attended by Hon'ble Vice Chancellor, Jagran Lakecity University Prof. Dr. Anoop Swaroop, Dean Prof. Dr. C.A. Gurudath and Dean Prof. Dr. Vivek Khare.

In the spirit of the game, here are some fun facts about it!
Table-Tennis might give the feel of an easy game from a distance; however, it is very tricky in reality. It helped in restoring the relations between USA and China in 1971 when China surprised everyone by inviting U.S. Table Tennis National Team for a series of friendly matches against the home team. It is also considered as the best brain game and the most played indoor game in the world. Ever wondered why once broken, a table tennis ball can never be used again, even after being glued back together? Well, it is because even though a tennis ball may look hollow is filled with an inert gas pressurized to the point of creating a definite bounce in the ball.

InnerShe, A health talk with Dr. Somya Dwivedi (MD Radiodiagnosis, Fellow of fetal imaging) at Jagran Lakecity University

‘It is extremely important to take care of the most important person in this world, ‘yourself’.’ The Women’s Cell at Jagran Lakecity University in collaboration with Qura Diagnostics and ResearchCenter organized the lecture ‘InnerShe’ aimed at empowering women from within. On 23rd January 2018, Dr. Somya Dwivedi (MD Radiodiagnosis, Fellow of fetal imaging) held an interactive session with the female students and faculty members of JLU Bhopal on various topics concerning the female health.

It is surprising that even after being extremely advanced in the field of technology, the reported cases of issues relating to female health in India haven’t gone down. The problem does not lie in the absence of medical facilities but in the lack of awareness amongst the crowd. Detecting the early signs of a disease and consulting your physician in time can prevent it from turning life threatening.

Diverse topics ranging from basic issues like menstrual health to prime concerns like cervical cancer were discussed. The female audience actively and enthusiastically participated in asking questions that were previously thought embarrassing. Dr. Somya enlightened the audience about the early signs of many fatal diseases that if diagnosed on time can be effectively cured.

Humans have now started residing in a concrete jungle and have adopted a corporate life. This life comes with its own set of discomforts in the form of diseases. It is surprising that making minor changes in one’s lifestyle can lead to the prevention of a majority of ailments. Dr. Somya shared some tips for a healthy life that if implemented on a daily basis can save you multiple trips to the doctor’s office.

The session turned out to be fun and informative in equal measures where every single woman in the audience came out, entitled to say that “I AM AWARE.”

Startup India Stand up India, Dream or Reality: BIG FIGHT at Jagran Lakecity University

The most anticipated annual event of JLU School of Commerce and Economics, where students from across various universities and colleges come to battle their way through the ‘Big Fight’ finally happened on 12th February 2018.

The stage was set, while the participants sat waiting for their turn to draw out their weapon and strike a blow hard enough to win them the bout. As projected, the annual debate competition at JLU School of Commerce and Economics was a massive hit with respect to the kind of enthusiasm and footfall the campus witnessed.

The event was graced by many dignitaries including the Guest of Honor, Prof. (Dr.) A.D.N. Bajpai, (Professor at Rani Durgavati University, Jabalpur and Ex Vice Chancellor Shimla University, Shimla), Chief Guest, Honorable Chancellor, Jagran Lakecity University, Shri. Hari Mohan Gupta, Judges Prof. (Dr.) H.S. Yadav, (Ex Vice Chancellor, Oriental University and Professor, RPEG, BU, Bhopal) and Mr. Rajeev Agarwal (Renowned Industrialist). The topic was ‘Startup India Standup India, a Dream or a Reality.’ Various opponents from distinguished universities and colleges spoke in rounds to present their views for, or against the motion respectively.

Startup India as announced by the Prime Minister, Shri Narendra Modi on 15th August 2015 is an initiative by the Government of India to empower the startups in India. Its action plan is based on three pillars namely: Simplification and Handholding, Funding Support and Incentives, Industry-Academia Partnership and Incubation. A staggering fund of INR 10,000 crore has been set up as a financial support to the start-ups. With this, the youth of India that is budding with various phenomenal ideas can implement them without being worried about the absence of funds, infrastructure or other support from the Government of India. The topic did hold a strong ground for the speakers for the motion.

‘The initiative looks very pleasant however, does it work on the ground realities?’ was the main argument raised by the speakers against the motion. Owing to its low success rate and various other loopholes in the plan of action, the initiative is not as effective as it could have been.
The debate was concluded on the note that though the idea of Startup India is a great initiative, to optimize its results, the policy makers of India need to rectify its ambiguities.

Deborah Rebecca Sam from BSSS Bhopal bagged the winning trophy in for the motion whereas Amaan Khan from JagranLakecity University brought the laurel home in against the motion category. Trishala Singh from IEHE, Bhopal and Akshat Bahety from JLU Bhopal both bagged the first runner up trophy in ‘against’ and ‘for’ the motion categories respectively. Abhijeet Das from Makhanlal University, Bhopal and Pooja Singh from IEHE, Bhopal bagged the second runner up trophies in ‘against’ and ‘for’ the motion categories respectively.

The event turned out to be full of excitement with the arguments that came from the opposite podiums. The audience left the auditorium looking forward to this event next year.
